Careers programme at St Dominic’s College

Career education and guidance are part of the College curriculum from Years 7-13.

The Careers Department has readily accessible careers and course information for students, parents and all departments within the College.  The Department also facilitates links between the College and the community, employers, industry and tertiary institutions.

The Careers Programme is designed to encourage the career development of each student through a range of the following services:

§  Individual career counselling and planning

§  Individual help with decision making

§  Information about careers and training providers

§  Help with c.v. preparation

§  Job search strategies

§  Interview practice and advice

§  Tertiary course advice

§  Assistance with applications for courses, jobs, scholarships, tertiary accommodation

§  On-line careers information

§  Brochures, books, DVD’s available

§  Help with career assessment tools – Pathfinder, Career Voyage

Years 7 & 8 take part in activities such as making a ‘Dreamcatcher’ to develop self-awareness by looking at their personal interests, qualities and strengths.  They also compete to create the longest Career worm to promote an awareness of career opportunities.

Year 9 take part in a Treasure Hunt to further develop an understanding of their own skills and abilities and to promote interaction with others.  A short focus on goal setting is also part of this programme.

Year 10 In Social Studies, Year 10 complete a careers unit linking their personal achievements, skills and values to areas of career interest. Once this is complete, students produce a career plan for the future.

Year 11 meet the ‘World of Work’ and complete unit standards relevant to this such as writing a curriculum vitae and exploring the importance of care and timeliness in the workplace.

Year 12 begin the year by goal setting followed by investigating several options and produce a plan for their futures.  Various career tools such as ‘Pathfinder’ and ‘Career Voyage’ are explored later in the year, along with opportunities such as Workchoice Day and various Open Days.

Year 13 The focus of this year is the transition from school to tertiary education and work.  As well as completing a unit standard ‘Managing your own Career’, this year level have individual interviews, regular tertiary speakers and meetings with liaison officers.  They are encouraged to visit tertiary institutions on Open Days and are provided with help in enrolling, both on-line and application packs.

GATEWAY PROGRAMME

This government funded initiative is designed to give students an insight into particular jobs.  Students are able to gain valuable work experience and credits towards their NCEA as well as the possibility of apprenticeships.
