Year 10 Economics

In Year 10 Economics the focus is primarily on financial literacy for our students along with introducing them to some of the key concepts that will apply in Level 1 Economics. We believe that financial literacy is one of the key skills students will need to succeed in their working life.

Students have the opportunity to complete a Level 1 Economics Achievement Standard.

Topics include:

  • Credit
  • Saving
  • Insurance
  • Consumer rights
  • Consumer demand
  • Economic resources
  • Money
  • Economic sectors

 

Level 1 Economics

Level One Economics focuses on microeconomics which is the connection between, and interdependence of, consumers, producers and the government. It helps students to understand the reasons for many of the economic, political and business decisions that are happening in the world around them. Topics include:

  • economic decision making
  • consumer demand
  • production and productive resources
  • business ownership
  • business expansion
  • market equilibrium
  • consumer rights
  •  

Level 2 Economics

Level Two Economics focuses on macroeconomic issues such as employment, economic growth, inflation and international trade. This further develops students' ability to understand and discuss current events in the New Zealand and world economy including government policiy.

 

Level 3 Economics

Level Three Economics brings together and extends the material covered in Level One and Two (though able students can pick up this subject in Year 13). This includes:

  •  microeconomic concepts regarding the market mechanism, business decision-making and market structures;
  • macroeconomic concepts such as trade, fiscal and monetary policy, teh foreign exchange market and trade and
  • market failure and the case for government intervention.
