Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

The ICT programme at St Dominic's aims to enable students to use computers and other ICT tools for information management and print design purposes within advertising, marketing, public relations, publishing, business applications and journalism. It also includes multimedia design projects for web development, animation and video production. Students will often work with real life tasks.

Personalised Tag / Bookmark
Being able to identify your own gear when there are lots of similar ones ie. bags, shoes, pencil cases etc.

Moving Messages
New immigrants to New Zealand want to learn about New Zealand culture. Many of these parents would like to help their children with the English language and find it difficult. Plan a visual form of a story that will assist these people.

Year 10

Career Path
Life after school is a daunting thought when there are so many options for a career. Students appreciate information on the latest career developments. Develop a presentation to promote a career.

Budgeting Service
Teenagers like to spend money. First jobs are important and looking after the pay packet can help to keep student loans small.

Media Challenges
Designing and developing speciality tasks is an important part of working to a client’s brief. Eg. ‘NZoom’ web challenge and the ‘Fair Go’ Ad awards.

Community Clubs
Clubs and teams work well together when they are able to identify with each other. Keeping contact with members is a vital role within each club.
The new school gym is available to be used after school for small groups to keep fit.

NCEA Achievement Standards
Students in year 10 classes have the opportunity to sit two Information Management Achievement Standards

Level 1

Travels with My Aunt
Your aunt (40 years old, fit, active and enjoys adventure activities) is coming to visit NZ from overseas. She will be staying with you for three days in August before going on a tour of NZ. She has asked you to produce a document containing information about a New Zealand regional area with adventure activities, car hire and the exchange rate between her home country and NZ.
Kindergarten Logo
A new kindergarten called ‘Alphabet Soup’ is starting up next to your school and the Head Teacher needs a logo which is to be used on the kindergarten newsletters, advertisements and signage

Safety in the Outdoors
People are more aware of safety issues within adventurous activities now than ever before.
The cost of accidents when participating in these activities is very high and of concern to many health professionals, parents and families of those injured.

Children's Games
Schools like to have students outside during break times. Often there are difficulties because of the weather and they need to allow students access to classrooms and other sheltered spaces. You are asked to identify and develop a suitable quiet activity as well as identifying a way to reproduce the activity to be suitable for other year levels.

Level 2

DLE Promo Unit St 2788
The Outdoor Education classes from school, as part of their programme, learn all about snorkelling. Mrs Taylor wishes to have a brochure produced that will assist her students to learn and retain the knowledge they experience. The aim is for the students to become role models with safety while having fun in the water.

Junior Nats
Tech 2.1, 2.4, 2.6, 2.7, US 5958
Many schools and other sporting and cultural clubs often have groups and teams compete at national competitions. Many of their junior groups like to have ways of identifying their team while mixing with others at the event.
Within the context of a Junior National Competition, you are to choose an issue on which to base your work within a particular sports tournament or cultural event.

Our Place Media St 2.6, 2.7
Our school needs to promote itself each year to prospective students, families who move into the area, or parents who may be considering sending their children to this school. Using digital media we can give a more in-depth view of the cultural, sporting and academic aspects of our school.

Positive Messages
Tech 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.7
Community organisations are often concerned about getting good messages out to the public. These public service announcements have often featured in a variety of media in recent years. Within the context of public service choose a popular topic and plan a campaign that would be suitable for an identified target market.

Level 3

Digital Instructions
In this digital world it has become important for organisations to provide instructions in a digital medium. This assists people to learn at their own pace when they have access to learning resources for skill development.
