Languages

Jap1.JPG  Languages

At St Dominic’s College, French,          Spanish, Japanese and Te Reo Maori are taught.

The emphasis of all language learning is on communication and learning about the different cultures.

Students learn to communicate in an additional language, develop their capacity to learn further languages and explore different world views in relation to their own.

The languages programme follows the following plan:

Year 7  Spanish and Maori                 half a year each

Year 8  French and Japanese              half a year each

Year 9 Spanish, Maori, French and Japanese for a full year.   Students choose one.

From Year 10 onwards, languages are optional, and of course are becoming more advanced and more interesting.

In Yr 11, 12 and 13 NCEA courses are offered in all languages.

Overseas Trips

In French there are exchange trips to New Caledonia, giving students first hand experience of hearing and practicing the language and interacting with French speaking students and their Homestay families.

There are also cultural trips to Japan, staying with families of our sister school.
